SMIT, Tina - 80, of Grafton, Kings County, left this earth on Wednesday, August 24, 2011, with grace and dignity, to be with the Lord. She was born on April 26, 1931, the eldest daughter of eleven children of the late Anno and Anna Sportel (Dieterman) and was raised in Midwolda, The Netherlands. She was a seamstress before she married Arend Smit in 1955 and they then immigrated to Nova Scotia to begin dairy farming. They had four children, Willem (Sylvia) Smit, Anne Baxter (formerly Smit), Robert Smit and Brian Smit; 10 grandchildren, Mike (Ann), Megan (Chris), Kerri, Matt, Joel (Becky), Jason (Lindsay), Allan, Leanne, Kevin, and Luc; two great granddaughters, Kalana and Ainsley. They were also like second parents to Dale (Sandra) Crandall and like grandparents to their children, Jason, Melanie and many others. She was predeceased by son-in-law, Malcolm Baxter; daughter-in-law, Audrey Smit and several siblings and in-laws. She was an outgoing, compassionate, fun loving, energetic person who spent her life caring for others and sharing her faith in the Lord. She and her husband acted as foster parents for many years for Family and Children's Services of Kings County, were a special needs home for Kings Regional Rehabilitation Centre, and volunteered for the Valley Pregnancy Centre, the Red Cross and the Sunshine Group at Grand View Manor. They also volunteered for many years with Gleanings for the Hungry in California. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, August 28, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. A private burial with family and close friends took place at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2011 in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Kings County. A celebration of Tina's life, followed by a reception, was held at 3:30 p.m. Monday, August 29, 2011 in the Christian Reformed Church, Kentville, Pastor Paul VanderKooy officiating, assisted by Pastor Bert VanderBeek. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Valley Pregnancy Centre, the Victorian Order of Nurses, the Carey-Me Fund or Gleanings for the Hungry.
