WHITNEY, Gertrude Victoria - 96, formerly of Kentville and Carriboo River, Pictou County, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011 in Shannex Blomidon Court, Greenwich. Born in Middleton, she was a daughter of the late Frederick Sr. and Lillian (Weagle) Graves. She was a loving mother and devoted her time to her family and her church. She spent most of her life in Kentville, where she was an active member of the Kentville United Baptist Church and the Ladies Auxiliary. She later attended St. David’s Presbyterian Church, Toney River. She loved to cook and generously shared her cooking with others. She also enjoyed reading and the beauty of flowers. Her joy and legacy is in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth (Robert) Bowron, Carriboo River; Shelly Whitney, Dempsey Corner; two sons, Gordon (Sandra), Kentville; David (Catherine), Round Hill; eight grandchildren, Jane (Jeff Rafuse), Mary (Allan MacVicar), Tess (Derek Fernandez), Jenna (James Milner), Becky (Philip Hollis), Christy (Adam Fraser), Mitchell and Megan Horridge; five great grandchildren, Emma Rafuse, Austin and Owen Fraser, Robert and Kaylee Hollis; nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Gordon Henry Whitney; a brother, Frederick Jr. and his wife, Marguerite. Visitation was held from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, August 22, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville. The funeral service, followed by a reception, was held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, August 23, 2011 in the Kentville United Baptist Church, Reverend Doctor John McNally officiating. Burial took place in the Lakeview Cemetery, Lakeville, Kings County. Family flowers only, by request. Donations in memory may be made to the Kentville United Baptist Church Memorial Fund, the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation or the charity of your choice. The family wishes to express their utmost appreciation for the kind and compassionate care that was extended to Gertrude at Blomidon Court and the Valley Regional Hospital.
