It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother Eileen Donovan. Eileen passed away August 26th, 2011, while surrounded by her loving family, at Victoria Haven Nursing Home in Glace Bay.
Born on August 16, 1922, in Glace Bay, Eileen was the daughter of the late Philip and Margaret (MacNeil) Penney. Eileen was a long time resident of 7th St. in New Aberdeen and was a member of St. John’s Church.
Eileen grew up in the Sterling area of Glace Bay. As a young lady, Eileen enjoyed playing cards and lacing up her skates on cold winter days. She also worked at the Glace Bay hotel and several other businesses around town. In later years you could find Eileen in the kitchen displaying her baking skills or doting on her grandchildren. She loved to read and keep up on current events. As a mother and grandmother she was always happy to share the wisdom she gained over the years.
Eileen will always be remembered for her great sense of humor. Her love, patience and guidance will be sadly missed and her loving family will forever treasure these gifts.
She is survived by her sons Wayne and Reginald (Ewa); daughters Colleen and Brenda (Peter); grandchildren Terry (Carol), Susan (John), Colin and Sarah; great-grandchildren Melia, Michael and Luke.
Eileen was predeceased by her husband Colin; brothers Leo, Raymond, Basil and sister Hazel.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will take place on Tuesday August 30 ,2 p.m., at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Third Street, New Aberdeen, Glace Bay with Deacon Leo Penny officiating.
Burial will take place immediately following the service at St. John’s Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy for Eileen, memorial donations in her memory may be made to the Victoria Haven Nursing Home.
Arrangements are under the direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral home, 16 Reserve St. Glace Bay.
The family would like to thank the staff of Victoria Haven Nursing Home for their wonderful care of our mother. Special thanks to Dr. Kent Cadegan for his years of care and dedication.
