It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mary (Margaret) MacKinnon of Sydney on Thursday, Oct. 8, 2009 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Glengarry, she was the eldest daughter of the late Martin and Catherine Ann (Gillis) MacKinnon.
She attended school in Big Pond and at Mabou Convent. She was a devout Catholic and member of Sacred Heart parish where she belonged to the Catholic Women's League. She had a long association with the MacGillivary Guest Home where she was a past president of the Ladies Auxiliary and served on the Board of Directors. She worked at Singer's Sewing Center, Wrights Limited and retired from the Braemore Home staff. She was a talented seamstress who gave freely of her time to family and friends and friends. She has a keen sense of interest in family genealogy, was an enthusiastic traveler, enjoyed playing cards with family, knitting and baking and outings at the Casino. Margaret's compassionate nature, generous spirit and easy going personality will be missed.
She is survived by her son Michael, Sydney; sisters Kay Carideo, Salem, Massachusetts, Betty Morrison, Minneapolis, Minnesota; brother Martin (Ester) MacInnis, Towanda, Pennsylvania; sisters-in-law Kay MacInnis, Big Pond, Anne MacInnis, Sydney; brother-in-law Duncan MacIntyre, DesMoines, Iowa and by many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband Alex; brothers Michael, John; sisters Florence MacIntyre and Josephine Colwell; brothers-in-law, Tony Carideo, Roy Morrison and Charles Colwell.
Visitation for Margaret MacKinnon will take place on Friday (today) at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10 am at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Anthony O'Connor officiating. Interment in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
Memorial donations may be made to MacGillivary Guest Home or a charity of choice.
