Leonard March, born Aug. 22, 1929, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, Sept. 3, 2011, with family members at his bed side.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late William and Mary March, long time residents of Havelock Street, Sydney.
Len was an avid skater and a bowler in his younger years. He was employed as a car salesman and prior to his retirement he was self employed as a carpenter/painter. He was a member of Sacred Heart Church, a Lector and Eucharistic Minister. He was an enthusiastic supporter of his beloved Montreal Canadiens.
Len is survived by his wife, Noreen; two daughters, Valerie (Greg) Merchant, Eastern Passage, N.S., Linda (John) Feringa, Port Elgin, Ont.; three sons, Bill (Glenda), Howie Center, Chris (Lori), Sydney, Leonard (Carolyn), Hammonds Plains, N.S.; eight grandchildren, Michael, Victoria, Paul Merchant, Quinn and Cameron Feringa, Lauren and Jude March, Brooke Lyn Marie March; and one great-grandchild, Cole Merchant.
He is also survived by his five sisters, Tina (Colin) MacGillivray, Genevieve MacGillivray, Halifax, Dorothy Holland (Ken) Fleming, Sydney, Eileen Michaud, Montreal, and Mildred (Tom) Hennessey, Kentville; his four brothers, Bill, Scarborough, Gordon, Coburg, Mike (Jean), Winnipeg, and George (Yvonne), Sydney.
Beside his parents he was predeceased by one sister, Vivian MacInnis.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Interment will be held at Resurrection Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to Palliative Care, Cape Breton Regional Hospital, or the VON.
The March family would like to sincerely thank the palliative care workers, especially Sharon Barron for support and compassion and the VON particularly Brent Musgrave and Ann Andrea for their outstanding support and consideration. Their efforts went above and beyond the call of duty. Also thanks to Shoppers Drug Mart, Prince Street, for their service and kindness.
