Elizabeth "Betsy" Foote

Elizabeth Florence ”Betsy” (Ross) Foote, 96 of the Valley View Villa, Riverton, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away August 29, 2011 in the Villa.
Born in Piedmont, she was a daughter of the late Hugh Edward and Ethel (Dempsey) Ross.
Betsy was a resident of the Villa for the past six years having previously lived in New Glasgow.
She attended high school in New Glasgow later receiving her RN at the Montreal General Hospital and did her Post Graduate work at the Toronto Psychiatric Hospital.
She went on to join the Canadian Army as a nursing sister (Lieutenant) in June of 1941 and served overseas behind the lines of the battlefields in Italy, Belgium and Holland. She ended her career with the Forces in November of 1946 having seen the German Army march home in defeat.
After leaving the Army she worked as an RN at various hospitals including the Aberdeen. Later in her nursing career she spent many years as a private duty nurse in Pictou County.
She was a member of St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church in Merigomish, the Royal Canadian Legion, Aberdeen Hospital Auxiliary, the Nursing Sister’s Association of Canada and the Alumni of the Montreal General Hospital.
She is survived by sister-in-law, Gertrude (Winthrop) Ross, High Crest Place, New Glasgow; nieces: Marjorie (Ross) Cameron, Thorburn; Janice (Ross) Williams, Barney’s River; Cathy (Ross) Cameron, Garden of Eden; nephews, Jack Ross (Anita) Green Hill; and Bill Ross, Piedmont.
She was predeceased by her husband Alexander J. Foote, brothers, William (Bill) Edward and Winthrop (Winnie) Copeland Ross.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel, New Glasgow on Saturday, September 10 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Glen Matheson presiding.
The family will receive visitors from 10 a.m. until the time of service.
