HUSKINS, George E. - It is with heavy hearts, that the family of George E. Huskins announce the passing of a wonderful husband, father, grandfather and friend on September 5, 2011, at Yarmouth Regional Hospital. Born May 23, 1926, in Yarmouth, he was a son of the late Everett and Emma (Schmit) Huskins. As a young man, George had the desire to drive trucks for a living, which he did for the CNR and most of his career for Irving Oil until his retirement in 1988, after 40 years of service. George was known as the gentle giant with very big hands and even a bigger heart. He enjoyed playing softball, bowling, and bean bags, and was well known for his skill of pitching horseshoes, winning many local prizes and championships. In his later years, he spent much time with his grandson, Alex, playing cards, watching wrestling and socializing with his new friends at the seniors apartment and going out to frequent outings with his friend, Eveyln. His enduring qualities made him well liked by every nurse that treated him at any of the hospitals he encountered. He is survived by daughter, Kelly (Tony) White, Yarmouth; sisters, Beatrice (Don) MacKinnon, N.B.; Elizabeth (Russell) Amirault, Yarmouth; brothers, John (Eunice), Spryfield; Anthony, Winnipeg; his only grandchild, Alex White. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by wife, Ann (Garron); sisters, Helen Huskins and Muriel Smith; brother, Wayne in infancy. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Sweeny’s Funeral Home & Crematorium Ltd., Yarmouth. Visitation took place Tuesday, September 6 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with prayers at 8 p.m., at Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel, where funeral service was held Wednesday, September 7 at 2 p.m. Deacon Stephen Bourque officiated. Interment followed in Our Lady of Calvary Cemetery. Family flowers only, please. Donations in George’s memory may be made to Yarmouth Hospital Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
