FURSETH - Olive Mary (nee Sutton) of Beechy, passed away at Prairie Health Care Centre in Cabri, SK on Wednesday, October 7, 2009. Olive was born March 8, 1918 in Lindsay, Ontario. Olive was the second child born in a family of eight. Parents were Robert and Janie Sutton. Olive married Gus Furseth on July 14, 1946. They came to Beechy district in 1949 where they farmed for 25 years on the Beechy Co-op Farm with 6 other families. Olive and Gus had three children Douglas (Vivian) of Calgary, Arlene (Jim) Peltier of Cabri and Cecil (Lynn) of Saskatoon. Grandchildren Kathryn (Duane) Goodwin, Jocelyn (Steve) Peltier-Huntley, Patrick Peltier, Tyler Furseth, and Jana Furseth. She is also survived by her sisters Beatrice Schwenning, Velma McKeown and Ruby Gillis. Olive was predeceased by her husband Gus in 1978; her siblings Blanche Sutton, Norman Sutton, Violet Shiel, and Jean Furseth. Olive attended Lemsford School where she completed her high school education. Later she attended Teacher's College - Moose Jaw Normal School - where she obtained her teacher's certificate and taught for 6 years. She supported her younger siblings in obtaining an education with her earnings from teaching. She met Gus in 1942 and they were married in 1946 after he returned from the war. Olive was always a hard worker with being one of the oldest in a large family and helping start the Co-op farm from bare prairie. Olive and Gus' first home on the farm was a grain bin, they later graduated to a basement and eventually the house was built in 1960. Olive once wrote that "On the farm one lives close to nature and knows natures every mood, whether it is good or bad. Indeed I know of few callings that offer such freedom, health and independence. Living on the Co-op farm made one self-reliant and cheerful. It breeds satisfaction of a peculiar brand that is difficult to define." Life on the farm helped make Olive very resourceful. She was big into reducing, reusing and recycling long before the recent trend hit. Olive was very involved in the community including Beechy Hospital Auxiliary, Beechy Hospital Board and the Senior's Club to name a few. She was also a proud NDP member. She enjoyed life to the fullest. Her activities including square dancing, old time dancing, playing cards, reading, berry picking, gardening and baking delicious treats for her family and friends. Olive moved from her home in Beechy to an apartment in the Prairie View Lodge in Swift Current in 2003. Olive was a breast cancer survivor since 1972. She remained cancer free and healthy until being diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September 2009. Donations can be made in her honour to the Cabri Union Hospital Auxiliary or the Canadian Cancer Society. A graveside service was held at the Beechy Cemetery on October 13, 2009 woth Pastor Cindy Gosling officiating. The family would like to thank everyone for their condolences.
