It is with great sadness, we the family announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother Elizabeth Irene ‘Betty’ Keagan, 91, a resident of Beacon Crescent, North Sydney, on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her family.
Mom was born in Bras d’Or and was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She was the daughter of the late Martin and Maude (Smart) Young.
She was a member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, and also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19. She enjoyed Friday night mixed darts at the legion with her best friends Ann, Mim and Mary. She loved to travel and travelled many times to Ontario and British Columbia to visit her family.
Betty is survived by her children, Charles ‘Chuck’ Keagan, who went the extra mile to grant her wish to remain living at home, also Elizabeth (Polly) Szalay, Marcella ‘Sally’ (John) Dawe, Annette Service and Harold Keagan, and a great number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, six generations. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Harry Keagan, her daughter, Marcella, two sons, John Henry Jr. and Frank Caffiers, also by her sister, Mary Haley, brothers Joe, Francis, Tom and Fred Young and a son-in-law, Bob Service.
The family wish to thank the ER staff of the Northside General Hospital for the great care shown to our mother.
A private family visitation and service will be held under the direction of W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Burial in St. Joseph Cemetery in Bras d’Or.
