Stephen Leo MacNeil, 89, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2009, at home.
Born in Sydney, he was the son of the late John and Margaret (MacLean) MacNeil. He was a dedicated family man who enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren, and preparing festive meals for gatherings. He also enjoyed golf and camping in Ingonish. Steve was a veteran of the Second World War. In his early years he was employed with the City of Sydney and later worked with the Cape Breton Development Corporation, until his retirement.
Steve is survived by his wife, Joan (MacInnis) MacNeil as well as children, Gerard (Carol), Stephanie (Edwin MacLellan), Nadine Strickey, Frank (Cathy), Elayne (Bernard Noik), and Brendan (Lisa). Steve is also survived by his sister, Sr. Catherine MacNeil, CND and his brother, Hector (Audrey); grandchildren include David, Michael, Christopher, Alex, Andrew, Beth, Scott, Stephanie, Chelsey, Paulina, David, Meagan and Margaret and great-grandchildren, Miya and Devin.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his former wife Mary Carmen (MacDonald); sisters, Mae (Bob) Hines, Anna (Ron) MacNeil, Josephine (Bert) Shannon, Margaret (Joe) Campbell and brothers, Neil, Hector, John (Marguerite) and Fr. Frank MacNeil.
At the request of Steve there will be no visitation. Funeral mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009.
