NEW GLASGOW – John Vernon Hector Wesley, 88, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, September 13, 2011.
Born in Stellarton, he was a son of the late John Richard and Mary Catherine (Conrod) Wesley.
He was a member of Christ Anglican Church, Stellarton, where he had served as Warden and member of various boards and committees. John graduated with a Bachelor of Science in 1946 from Acadia University and briefly served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He graduated from the American Landscape School, Iowa and the Executive Management Development Program, Dalhousie University. John was employed with the Federal Department of Agriculture, Halifax, for 29 years, retiring as Officer in Charge. For many years he worked alongside his father operating the Wesley Plant Nursery, New Glasgow. John was a sports enthusiast, having coached and played with the Halifax Rugby Club for many years. He was affectionately called “Bucky” by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. John was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Isobel (MacKay); sons, John “Jay” (Diane) and their daughters, Gillian (Andrew) and Brittany, Halifax; Christopher (Debbie) and their children, Omer (Britny), Emily, Nicole, and grandchildren, Keagan (mother, Tasha), Tyler, Logan (Antigonish/Guelph, Ont.); daughter, Catherine Wesley (Mike Heighton) and their daughter, Cali, New Glasgow; sisters, Maizie Hanright, Aylmer, Que.; Elsie Miller, Bedford; sisters-in-law, Doris Rodgers, Vancouver, B.C. and Alice Rogers, Welsford; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Arthur (Alberta) Wesley, William (June) Wesley, Roy Rodgers, Bernie Rodgers and George (Susan) Rodgers; brothers-in-law, Orin Hanright and George Miller.
The family will receive visitors 7-9 p.m. today in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow, from where funeral service will be 2 p.m. Saturday in the chapel with Rev. Peter Armstrong officiating. Interment will be held at a later date.
Donations may be made in John’s memory to Christ Anglican Church or Valley View Villa Recreation Fund.
