MITTON, EDGAR W. - Edgar W. Mitton, 85, of Riverview, passed away peacefully at The Moncton Hospital on Thursday September 15, 2011. Born in Moncton, he was the son of the late Beverly and Laura (Wood) Mitton. Edgar began his working life as co-owner of the family dairy farm which included a milk pasteurizing operation, door to door milk delivery and a dairy bar. In later years Edgar and his family owned and operated various businesses in the community. One of Edgar’s passions was being involved in several associations and in his community. He served on the Albert County Council and later the Riverview Town Council. He was a Director on the Greater Moncton Town Planning Commission, the Albert County Historical Society and served for 31 years with the NB Protestant Orphanage. For 16 years he was the President of Southeastern Mutual Insurance Company and was also an active member of NB Liberal party, the Riverview Lions Club and the NB Mobile Home Assoc. He enjoyed sports and the out of doors, played hockey in the NB Maritime Junior hockey league and other local hockey teams plus coached in the Riverview Minor hockey league for 6 years. He was an active member for many years of the Beaver Curling Club and the Moncton Golf and Country Club. His other love was travelling and over the years had the opportunity to visit such places as Russia (for the first Russia Canada Hockey Series), Scotland, England and many areas in Canada and the US. Edgar will be sadly missed by his daughter, Carolyn Kavanagh (Jim), Halifax; son, Bruce (Karen Cooper), St. John’s, NL; grandson, Peter; stepchildren, Carol Nicholson (Ted), Riverview, Eddie Cochrane (Gay), Fredericton; brother, Ken (Jean), Riverview; sister-in-law, Mavis Mitton, Riverview; several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his first wife, Dorothy (Coles) (2000); his second wife, Ruby (Smith) (2009); sons, Peter and John; brothers, Harris and Ronnie; sister-in-law, Helen.
Visitation at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home, 1657 Mountain Road, Moncton (858-1995) on Sunday from 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Funeral Service at Ferguson Knowles Funeral Home Chapel on Monday September 19, 2011, 1:30 pm, Rev. Danny Compton officiating. Reception in the Funeral Home Reception Centre following the service. Interment, Wesleyan Union Cemetery, Riverview.
