New Glasgow – Millie McGibbon. It is with intense sadness and a profound sense of loss that we announce the death of Millie McGibbon, who died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on September 17, 2011 at the Aberdeen Hospital in New Glasgow.
Born in Maywood, Illinois, January 21, 1923, she was a daughter of the late William and Antoinette Jacobs. Millie was predeceased by the love of her life Charlie McGibbon, sister Toni and brother Bill. Millie was a proud graduate of Mount Allison University where she met Charlie and many wonderful friends. She cherished her time there and remained an active alumnus throughout her life. Millie dedicated her life to others, first to her family who she loved and guided to success. Then to the families of others who she helped during her career with Children’s Aid in both Halifax and New Glasgow. Millie was a tough card player and keen tennis player. She loved life and was known for her sense of humor and genuine warmth. She and Charlie spent a number of wonderful winters vacationing in Florida with their many friends and family.
A much loved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Millie is survived by her children: Blake (Celine), Montreal; M’Ellen Mathers (Harry), Halifax; Susan Bowden (Richard), Uruguay; Nancy Carpenter (Steve) Fort MacMurray; Sandra Marshall (Dave), Albert Bridge; Bill (Helen), Abercrombie; Barb Lane (Brian), Halifax. She is also survived by grandchildren: Marie-Eve and Rachel (Jonathan Marcil) McGibbon; Melissa (Kevin Cunningham), Harry and Michael (Kemi) Mathers; Amanda (Gabe Gil), Emily (Robert Unterhitzenberger) and Jessie (Stephanie) Bowden; Lisa Cook (Darren), Peter (Jennifer) and John David Carpenter; Jason (Tamar) and Stephanie (Tristan Steele) Marshall; Courtney Comeau (Luke), Kayley and Kelsey McGibbon; Breanna and Alex Lane. As well as, 20 loving great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Heartfelt thanks to the guardian angels who took very special care of Millie: Ann Ripley, Hannah Fennell, Jean Langley, Linda Arsenault, Monica Beaudin, Brenda Wilson and Cathy Graham. Visitation will be 7-9 pm Monday, September 19, at R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, September 20 at Trinity United Church, New Glasgow. Reception to follow in the church hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Aberdeen Health Foundation, the SPCA or a charity of your choice.
