Smith, Thomas “Tom” Henry – 96 , Willow Lodge, Tatamagouche, formerly of Truro and Middle Stewiacke, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 17th, 2011. Born May 22, 1915, “Tom” was the youngest son of the late James Alfred Smith and Catherine Eliza Wilson (Payne) of Lower Sackville. Tom began his early working career as a chauffeur for prominent Halifax families. He served during WWII in the Army Artillery, stationed in Halifax due to an injury. He worked for Imperial Oil in the main office, later transferring to the Eastern Passage Marketing Plant until his retirement. He was an active member of the Sackville and District Fire Department for many years, and was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 26, Truro and an active member in the Atlantic Marksman Association. He loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. Tom lived a long active life with his family and friends. Tom is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Bessie Mae (Kaulback); daughter, Judith (David) Leedham, Betty Ann Richards (Jim Crilly); sons, Thomas Jr., Charles (Helen), David (Angela) and Dean; 12 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by grandson, Thomas; brothers, Frederick and Walter. Visitation will be held from 7-9 p.m. on Tuesday, September 20 with a Legion Tribute Service, beginning at 6:45 p.m. in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow Street, Truro. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21 in Middle Stewiacke United Church with Rev. Larry Harrison officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 26, Truro or the Veterans Unit at Camp Hill Hospital, Halifax, N.S.
