HAZEL IONA SCANSEN
August 13, 1930 – October 10, 2009
Hazel passed away from this life into the presence of her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ on October 10, 2009 at the Victoria Hospital in Prince Albert at the age of 79 years. She was born on August 13, 1930 in Shaunavon, SK to Ab and Lillie Barton. She was the second youngest of 6 children. She married Dean Scansen on August 14, 1954 and raised 4 children with much love and care. From 1960 – 1980 Dean and Hazel cared for many foster children and senior citizens. From 1980 – 1989 Hazel worked as a housemother at the YWCA. Hazel had a deep faith in God and served faithfully in the church for many years. Hazel’s greatest passion and gift was making people feel welcome – she loved to have company and would invite friends over often. She also loved to bake and share that baking with everyone – one thing she was well known for were her freshly baked overnight buns – almost every Saturday morning she would bake a huge batch of buns and personally deliver them to friends, family or someone who was sick. Hazel was a true, caring friend to all who knew her – she was a wonderful, loving mother and grandmother and a devoted wife and she will be missed more than words could ever express. Hazel is survived by her husband Dean; her son Brian of Prince Albert; her son Vernon (Anne) of Winnipeg, MB; her daughter Kathy (Dan) Reid and their children Kirstin, Jordan, Kelsey and Jania of Langley, BC and her daughter Lenore (Dem) Nye and their daughter Alayna of Prince Albert; her sister Wilma Haakensen of Ponteix, SK; her sisters-in-law Annie Barton, Vi Barclay, Jean Barker and Fran Scansen, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Ab and Lillie Barton; her brother Herb Barton; her sisters Clara Thomson, Erma Scansen and Eva Scansen; her parents-in-law Melvin and Alma Scansen; her brothers-in-law Louis Haakensen, Bob Thomson, Al Barclay, Bob Barker, Earl Scansen, Wilferd Scansen, Aron Scansen, Ray Picard and her sister-in-law Marlene Picard. Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 19, 2009 at First Baptist Church, 1351 – 28th Street East, Prince Albert, SK with Reverend Devin Seghers officiating. Interment will be held at Prince Albert Memorial Gardens. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to First Baptist Church Memorial Fund or Gideon’s International of Canada. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.grays.ca. Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Gray's Funeral Chapel, Marianne Turcotte, Funeral Director.
