It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Edward Binder, 95, of Glace Bay. Edward passed away with his loving family at his side on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2011, at Victoria Haven Nursing Home, Glace Bay.
Born in Glace Bay, and a life-long resident of New Aberdeen, he was the son of the late Simon and Katherina (Schuller) Binder.
Edward was a member of Warden United Church, Glace Bay. He was a veteran of the Armed Forces. He also was employed with Devco in #20 and #26 collieries retiring in 1981 after many years of service. Edward was affectionately known among his co-workers as “the pink panther”. He was a life long fan of Toronto Maple Leafs and also loved the Toronto Blue Jays. He enjoyed Jim Reeves music.
Edward will be sadly missed by his daughters, Dianne (Crawford Lloyd), Deborah (late Kevin Odell); cherished grandchildren, Sheldon, Gardiner Mines, Raylene, Sydney, Patrick, Halifax, Jessica (Darren Whalen), Moncton; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Sarah; sister, Anne; special nieces, Eunice Young, Betty Davidson, Linda McNeil; nephew, Blaise (Linda) Binder; also several other nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Edward was predeceased by his loving wife, Lillian (Smith), sisters, Irene, Elizabeth, brothers, Simon, Honce, Fred, George, Bill and special niece, Carmen LeBrun.
In honoring Edward’s wishes, cremation has taken place under the care and direction of V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. A memorial service will be held in October at Warden United Church, Glace Bay, with a date and time to be announced. Interment will be held at Greenwood Cemetery, Glace Bay.
No flowers by request please. Donations in Edward’s memory may be made to Warden United Church, Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or SPCA.
At this time, we, Edward’s family would like to thank the staff of Victoria Haven Nursing Home and the New Waterford Home Care for their exceptional care and compassion shown to our dad.
