WAGG, Ranken “Doc” William, October 19, 1940 to September 12, 2009– Ranken passed away at the age of 68 at the Three Hills Health Centre, Alberta, from complications of prostate cancer. He was born in Norris Arm North and was always a proud Newfoundlander. Ranken served twenty years in the Canadian Army where he worked in the tank division and taught mountain climbing, defensive driving, and small arms, did overseas stints in Germany, Egypt and Cyprus and was also a member of the Army's musical ride. Then, he had a second career as a correctional officer for twenty-two years at Spy Hill, Alberta. Ranken was an avid follower of the stock market and a shrewd investor who frequently dispensed financial advice to others. He was also a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for twenty-nine years and a long-time member of the Lord Strathcona Horse and The Canadian Association of United Nations Peacekeepers. After retirement, he enjoyed playing poker, darts and bowling. Ranken was a proud father and devoted grandfather. He will be sadly missed by his wife, Susan Pirs, and his three sons, Doug, Trevor and Mitch; daughters-in-law, Randeen and Ulrike; five grandchildren, Morgan, Grace, Rachel, Gina and Luke. Also left to mourn are his three brothers, Burt (Betty), Ross (Phyllis) and Claude (Valda) and his sister, Maisie (Ross Grimes), his mother-in-law, Milly Pirs and his two sisters-in-law, Barb Gowland and Lila Kalnins. Ranken also leaves behind numerous cousins, nieces and nephews, plus his best friends, Eric and Viva Balson. He was predeceased by his parents, Albert and Edith Wagg. Cremation has taken place and burial service will be conducted from Bethany Pentecostal Church in Norris Arm North on Wednesday, October 21st at 2 pm.
