It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, Martha Bennett. Martha died peacefully Saturday, Sept. 24, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Old Perlican, N.L., she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Janet (Button) Hopkins.
Martha was a member of St. Matthew Wesley United Church and a former member of the Ruth unit of the UCW. Martha was an avid gardener, winning many ribbons over the years for her lovely roses, and was a valued member of the North Sydney Garden Club.
She was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed cooking wonderful meals for her family. She was an independent and active lady and was proud to be able to care for herself and remain in her own home.
Martha was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her daughter, Gloria Bennett, North Sydney; her sons, William (Roseanne) Bennett , Big Bras d’Or and David (Linda) Bennett, North Sydney; her grandchildren, Tanya Bennett, Barrie, Ont., David Bennett and Donald (Cheryl) Bennett, both of North Sydney, Gloria (Troy) Chiasson, Oromocto, N.B.; her great-grandson, Owen Chiasson; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Martha was predeceased by her husband, William T. Bennett, a sister, Blanche Francis, brothers, George, Harvey and Walter, her grandson, William E. Bennett.
Visitation for Martha will be 7-9 p.m. Monday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, at St. Matthew Wesley United Church, Rev. David Luker, officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Matthew Wesley United Church. Burial will follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
