98, Bras d’Or
Ellen Regis Whryn, a longtime resident Bras d’Or, peacefully passed away at the Northside General Hospital, with her loving family by her side on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2009.
Born in Mill Creek, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Nellie (Marsh) Carey.
She was a well-known resident in and around Bras d’Or as the square dance caller at Birch’s Dance Hall in Millville, many weddings and special occasions. She was also a midwife, assisting Dr. Gouthro in bringing newborn babies into Bras d’Or and surrounding areas.
Ellen Regis is survived by her son, Dennis (Robina) Jessome, Thorold, Ont.; daughters, Helen (David) Finney and Eunice Hyde, both of Sydney Mines. She is also survived by son-in-law, John Elrick, St. Catharines, Ont.; grandson, Leonard (Carol) Jessome, St. Catharines, Ont., whom she raised from birth; two sisters-in-law, Catherine Carey, Sydney Mines, Marie Carey, St. Catharines, Ont. She will be sadly missed by her dear friend, Lou Reid; 34 grandchildren; 59 great-grandchildren; 43 great great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband, Clifton ‘Darby’ Jessome, second husband, James ‘Jim’ Whryn, son, James ‘Buckshot’ Jessome, daughters, Theresa (Bill) Elrick, Eyvonne Elrick, Audrey (Louis) Nagy and Alexander at birth, son-in-law, Ray Hyde, sisters, Martha (Paul) Varga, Annie (Frank) Fyfe, Beatrice (Robert) Aucoin, Corlella (Bob) Pero, Katie (Garfield) King, Dinah (Homer) Piette, Bertha (Keith) Ball and Mable at birth, brothers, Tommy (Mary), Dukkin (Emma), Joe Joe (Dorothy), Leonard, Teddy, Louis (Sadie), Markle (Barbara) Alexander at birth.
In cooperation with Francis Funeral Home, Main Street, Sydney Mines, the visitation will be held there Tuesday, Oct. 20 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23 at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. Interment to follow in parish cemetery.
