CORKUM, Mercedes - 85, of Arlington, Kings County, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2011 in the QEII Health Sciences Centre, Infirmary Site, Halifax. Born in Lourdes, Newfoundland, she was a daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Rioux) Companion. Mercedes was the cherished mother of Ronald (Irene), Arlington; Lloyd (Joanne), Halifax and Kenneth “Reg”, New Minas. She was a beloved grandmother of Dean (Shelley), Canning; Andrea, Michael and Rick and great grandmother to Hannah and Josie. She is also survived by a sister, Myrtle (Russell) Connolly, Dartmouth; many nieces and nephews. Mercedes was predeceased by her husband, Harry; sister, Theresa Corkum; brothers, Stan, Howard, Gus and Ray. Besides caring for her own family, Mercedes opened her home to those in her immediate community needing convalescing care. She later worked as a nurse’s aid at the Wolfville Nursing Home. Previous to this, Mercedes worked in the drug store, the Red & White grocery store and the Bank of Nova Scotia in Canning for a number of years. She will be remembered for her kind and generous heart, her great sense of humour, her boundless energy and vitality but most of all for her great love of family and friends. To know her was to love her. We love you, Mom, and we will miss you. Visitation was held from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, September 24, 2011 in the White Family Funeral Home, Kentville, where the funeral service followed by a reception was held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 25, 2011. Burial took place in the Scott’s Bay Cemetery. Donations in memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
