It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Ches Whalen on Monday, Sept. 26, 2011, at the Halifax Infirmary, Halifax.
Born in Northern Arm, Nfld., he was the son of the late Alexander and Bessie (Budgell) Whalen. Ches was employed with the Coast Guard College as an engineer until his retirement.
He enjoyed going to bingo, the casino and playing darts. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Ches is survived by his special friend, Elaine (Campbell) Davis; his son, Wayne (Pauline) Whalen, Halifax; daughter, Linda (Edward) Kane, North Carolina; three grandchildren; sister, Gwen Driver, Ottawa; brother, Ross (Pat) Whalen, Hampton, N.B.
Besides his parents, Ches was predeceased by his former wife, Alice Marie (McCarthy) Whalen; sister, Gertie; brothers, Ron, Ellis and Oscar.
A special thanks to his nieces, Vesta and Patricia for being there for Ches.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 30, 2011, at the S.W. Chant & Son Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney, with Rev. Sheldon Chant officiating.
Interment to follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, New Waterford.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the QE11 Hospital, 8.4 Community Health Unit, 1746 Summer St., Halifax, N.S., B3H 3A7.
