FAIRNEY, DANIEL H. - Died peacefully at his residence with his wife Janice by his side on 18th September, 2011. Daniel Hugh Fairney of Chamcook, NB, was born in Cardiff Wales. After training as an engineer with James Howells of Cardiff, he joined the Cunard White Star Line as a junior engineer officer and a member of the Royal Navy Reserves. When war broke out in 1939, he found himself a member of the Royal Navy. In 1940 he was seconded to the Royal Canadian Navy. He served in both the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans and also took part in the D-Day Landings. After the war he continued serving with the navy, reaching the rank of Commander (E) and was decorated with the Canadian Defence Medal. In 1966 he was appointed Director of the Auxiliary Fleet, charged with overseeing all the patrol vessels, fireboats, tug boats, etc. used by the Royal Canadian Navy. He retired to Chamcook in 1981. He became the chairman or the steering committee on the feasibility of developing a local service district council, and then served as the Chamcook Local Service District Council's first Chairman. Daniel served as a member of the Memorial Wall committee, and was also involved with the former Saint John Frigate Program as a consultant. He was predeceased by his daughter Susan and his first wife Kathleen, and is survived by his wife Janice and his two sons, Hugh of Cambridge, Thomas (Lisa) of Chilliwack and grandchildren Kayley, Nicholas and Michelle and stepson Calum Lee of Keswick Ridge and step grandchildren Hunter and Carter, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at St. John the Baptist Chapel of Ease in Chamcook on Saturday, October 15 at 11 a.m. Canon John Matheson will officiate. A reception will immediately follow the service at the family home: 204 Glebe Road, Chamcook. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care and direction of Humphreys Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, Extra Mural Program, St Stephen & St George, and CNIB and Charlotte County Archives.
