We the family of Eileen Murphy, wish to announce the passing of our precious aunt and sister, into the Kingdom of God on Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in North Sydney, Eileen was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elsie (Vatcher) Murphy.
In her earlier years, Eileen worked for Irving Convenience Store and Gabe MacDonald. Eileen was past president, secretary and treasurer of the North Sydney Seniors and Pensioners Club, a member of the Bras d’Or Seniors Club, the auxiliary of the Northside Community Guest Home and was quite active in all aspects of these organizations. In her earlier years she also canvassed for the Cancer Society. Dee was an avid bingo player. She also loved to dance and attended most functions where this activity was prevalent. She loved listening to music and in June was able to see her Daniel O’Donnell, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Eileen always had a big smile for everyone and would be there to help a friend or family member whenever she could, up until her illness would no longer allow this. Giving to others was a natural trait for Dee, and she expected nothing in return.
She loved to go on bus tours with the seniors club, and travelled to many places on this beautiful island and to Halifax to see the Tattoo on a number of occasions. Her favourite bus tour was to Saint Anne DeBeaupres with her sisters, Betty and Marie, and many of her friends, which she did on a number of occasions, and would have done so every year up until her illness.
Dee is survived by her sister, Betty Ivey; her brothers, Archie and William Murphy; and sister-in-law, Mary Murphy. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and great nephews, and all the new additions to the family over the past four years (four great-great nephews and one great-great niece, whom she adored).
Dee was predeceased by her partner of 49 years, Albert MacKeigan, her parents, Thomas and Elsie; brothers, James and Gerald Murphy, a sister, Marie Benac (George), brother-in-law, Ralph Ivey and sister-in-law, Lillian Murphy.
As per Dee-Dee’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. Funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney, with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society or Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
