It is with deep sadness we announce the sudden passing of James Burleigh Smith on Friday, Sept. 23, 2011, at Roseway Hospital, Shelburne.
Born in Sydney Mines, on June 25, 1929, he was the son of the late Robert Burleigh and Margaret Ann (MacKay) Smith.
Jim had been a member of the Canadian Armed Forces for 25 years. He served with the United Nations Peace Corp. in the Middle East for 13 months. He was employed with Wilson’s Shopping Centre for a number of years.
Jim was an avid gardener and outdoorsman. He was a past member of Barrington Area Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, the former June Kendrick; sons, James B. Jr. (Karen), Shag Harbour, Robert, Kentville; daughters, Leslie (Eric) Rupke, Ayr, Ont., Tammi (Patrick) Ross, Halifax; grandchildren, Michael and Madelyn and great-granddaughter, Melody. He is also survived by his brothers, John, Sydney Mines, Peter (Libby), Dartmouth, Tom, Sydney Mines; sisters, Peggy Audoux, Sydney Mines, Lillian (John) McPhee, Dease Lake, B.C. and Jenny Lou, Sydney Mines. Also surviving are his nieces, Kathy Audoux, Cindy Hebert, Betsy Daignealt; nephews, Bobby Joe, John and Denis Audoux, Jim Smith, Rob and Donald McPhee and Tom Smith.
Besides his parents, Jim was predeceased by his sisters, Catherine Annie (in infancy), Annie Jane (in early childhood), Cassie (1997) and by his brother, Bobby (1967).
A memorial service was held at H. Huskilson’s Funeral Home on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, officiating by Rev. Sim Rushton.
