Ruthe Isabel (Rogers) Martin, 88, of Savannah, Ga., died at Tara Nursing Home October 19, 2009.
She was born in Boston, Mass., in 1921 to parents Iganatius Waizeman Rogers and Ruby Stewart Rogers. Following her mother's death, Mrs. Martin was raised in Boston by her aunt Estelle B. Stewart and on P.E.I. by her aunt and uncle Martha and Sam MacLeod. At 17, she left P.E.I. and rejoined her father and stepmother, Inez (Womble) Rogers, in Savannah.
She took nurse's aid training and served as a nursing assistant in Savannah hospitals during the Second World War. Mrs. Martin completed business school in Savannah and worked as a secretary for the State and Federal Civil Service for many years including at the Corps of Engineers in Savannah, at the Base Commander's office at Hunter Army-Air Field and at Georgia Regional Medical Center.
She married her husband in 1946 and for over 25 years accompanied him on his tours of duty in the Air Force in Arizona, Florida, Georgia, New York, Oklahoma and Puerto Rico. Mrs.
Martin was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church. She was an avid reader and brought her love of reading as a volunteer reading to children at local schools and hospitals.
She is survived by daughters, Marty Izaguirre (husband Francisco) of Okatie, SC, and Mary Martin (husband Edwin Fruit) of Seattle, WA; granddaughter, Lindsay Hodgson of Atlanta; sister, Joyce Fischer; and other relatives in Georgia, Massachusetts and Canada.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by loved ones including her husband of 55 years, Lyman F. Martin, and brother, Waizeman Rogers.
Her remains will be cremated in accordance with her wishes. At a later date a memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church chapel followed by a celebration of her life at the Rogers' family home of Joyce Fischer on Wilmington Island in Savannah.
