It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we, the family, announce the passing of our mother and grandmother, Edith Hawco, age 81, of the Northside Community Guest Home on Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, surrounded by her loving family.
Born in Sydney on Nov. 15, 1929, Edith was the daughter of the late George and Lena Townsend.
Edith was actively involved with the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, for 50 years and being a life member, received the highest award, the Palm Leaf. She was past president of the Sydney Police Boys and Girls Club Ladies Auxiliary, member of Club 55 and the Pensioners’ Club. Edith loved to bowl, play darts and enjoyed playing bingo and scat at the home with her friends. She loved to read, write letters to friends and family, knit and always had a special homemade gift for you. Always a smile or a song, Edith will be truly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Edith will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by her three daughters, Shirley (Reg) Samson, Gloria Dalton (Paul Norman) and Catherina Keough-Pendergast; five sons, Kenny (Janet), Danny, Ricky, Freddy (Cheryl) and Andrew (Cathy); 20 grandchildren, Craig, Gavin, Edith-Marie (Jr), Jennifer (Craig), Blaise, Corey, Brett, Michelle (Dan), Michael, Mark, Coady, Seith, Isaac, Leanne, Stephen, Danielle, Mark, Bronson, Jordan and Nathan; nine great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Patricia Hawco (Matthew Donovan), David (Dianne) Hawco, Audrey (John) Martell and Frances (John) MacNeil and stepnieces, Donna (Lorne) Zinck and Gayle Lake. Edith is also survived by two brothers, Fred and Ross Townsend; sister-in-law, Jean Townsend; daughters-in-law, Donna Keough and Theresa MacKenzie; several nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by her husband, Wilfred Hawco; brothers, Parker and Jerry Townsend; sister, Marion Fourtier; son-in-law, Gordon Dalton; stepson-in-law, Steve Lake; and her first husband and father of her eight children, Maurice Keough.
Visitation will take place at Sydney Memorial Chapel on Friday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held at St. George’s Anglican Church on Saturday 11 a.m., with Rev. Laura McCue officiating. Interment will follow at Hardwood Hill Cemetery.
