CORBETT, Irene; October 29, 1920- October 1, 2011. Irene was born in St. Hubert, Quebec, the daughter of William and Victoria (Palmer) Whiteford who had earlier emigrated from Newcastle, England. She trained and worked for a number of years as a baby nurse both in Montreal and New York. When she met the Scotsman who was to become her husband she was working at Crown Trust and living in Two Mountains, Quebec. She and the Rev. Raymond Corbett were married in 1974 and made their first home in Verdun where Ray was minster of the Verdun/Crawford Park United Church Pastoral Charge. In 1979 Ray accepted a call to Beacon United Church and they moved to Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Irene was active in many aspects of the church and town. She participated fully in the church life of Beacon as an exemplary minister’s spouse and member,and in the renewal organizations of the United Church. She was a member of Zion United Baptist Church where she served as a Deacon. She also volunteered for many years with the Yarmouth County Museum, the hospital, the SPCA and the St. Andrew’s Society. She is survived by her husband and cousins in Ottawa and England. She was predeceased by a brother Matthew and sister Dorothy. Visitation took place Monday, October 3rd from 7-9 pm at Sweeny’s Funeral Home Chapel. A Funeral Service was held Tuesday, October 4 2011 at 2 pm in Zion United Baptist Church, Parade Street, Yarmouth, Rev. Brian Wallace officiated. Interment followed in Yarmouth Mountain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donation made be made to Doctor’s without Boarders or the Yarmouth SPCA.
