Harry Garfield O'Hara, (93) of Sherbrooke, Guysborough County, and formerly of Port Bickerton, died Sunday, October 11, 2009, in St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, Sherbrooke.
Born in Port Bickerton he was a son of the late Theodore and Hattie (Horton) O’Hara.
Prior to his retirement Harry was employed as a commercial deep sea fisherman for 60 years. He was also an avid boat builder who built his own lobster boats. A member of the Orange Lodge, he served as Past Master as well as Past County Master for five Lodges. Harry enjoyed playing the fiddle and in his younger days would play for dances around Guysborough County.
He is survived by daughter Iola Christine (Wayne) Huggan, Westville, grandchildren, Sidney Kaiser, Claude Kaiser (Tanya), Angie Kaiser (Mike) and Danielle Ehler (Sandy); eight great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and special friend and companion, Olive Rossong, Port Bickerton.
He was predeceased by wife, Margaret Matilda (Harpell) O’ Hara; brothers, Edward and Sherman; sisters, Minnie, Agatha, Beulah and Lenora. Visitation will be held Tuesday 7-9 p.m. in G.W. Giffin Funeral Home, 34 Main Street, Sherbrooke.
Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Port Bickerton United Baptist Church with Pastor Norman Pearce officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery, Port Bickerton. Memorial donations may be made to the Port Bickerton United Baptist Church, Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of choice.
