It is with profound sorrow that we, the family, announce the passing of Sandra Jean (Wallace) Currie on Friday, October 7, 2011. Sandra was born in Sydney Mines, the daughter of the late James and Flo (Pearo) Wallace.
An extremely dedicated wife and mother, Mom was a great supporter of our interests whether it be many hockey games, dance recitals, choir practices or rounds of golf, she was always front and centre to cheer us on and lend a hand when we needed one. Mom loved to travel and enjoyed many of the family trips to Maine and New Hampshire and her trips to Massachusetts to visit family. Two of her most recent special trips were her dream trip to Europe with Dad and also to Florida with Dad and his sister and brother-in-law, Donna and Jim MacLellan. Mom also loved being able to travel to visit with her children and grandchildren and seeing different parts of Canada.
Mom was a much-respected teacher, having spent her 35-year career teaching at Macdonald Complex in Dominion, N.S. A longtime, faithful member of Knox United Church, Glace Bay, Mom served as an elder for several years and enjoyed the fellowship of the congregation.
A craft-lover, Mom enjoyed spending time with her fellow crafting companions creating many beautiful pieces for her family and friends. Another favourite pastime was her weekly meeting with her Wednesday Lunch Bunch ladies. Mom cared deeply for her family and close friends often putting their needs ahead of her own — just one of her numerous, wonderful traits that endeared her to so many.
Mom is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, Trevor; children, Jennifer (Brian) Hanterman, Marwayne, Alta., Jeffrey (Erica), Fredericton, N.B., Rebecca (Keith) Morrison, Dartmouth, and Marc (Megan Omand), Sydney; grandchildren, Emma and Piper Hanterman, Meredith and Patrick Currie and Daniel Morrison; dear brother, Jim (Cindy) Wallace, Boularderie, N.S.; and cherished sister, Cathy Wallace, North Sydney; beloved Aunt Mae Arsenault, Alder Point; and Susan (Clifford) Cook, Dominion, best friend of 45 years; brothers and sisters-in-law, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mom was predeceased by her parents, sister, Mary Verna, parents-in-law, Allie and Dot (Lee) Currie.
Visitation will be held Wednesday, Oct. 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at V.J. McGillivray Funeral Home, 16 Reserve St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13 at Knox United Church, 270 Commercial St., Glace Bay with Reverend Doctor John A. Finlayson officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mom’s memory to the An Cala Unit (Palliative Care) Cape Breton Regional Hospital or to the Brain Tumor Foundation of Canada.
Online expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.vjmcgillivray.ca.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff of the An Cala Unit, 4th Floor Cape Breton Regional Hospital for their wonderful care of Mom in her final days. We would like to also acknowledge the special care Mom received from former student, Lisa McNeil-Campbell, Volunteer Coordinator An Cala Unit. You all helped our whole family get through some very difficult days.
