Harold Colborne passed away peacefully at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney, on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011.
Born at Whitney Pier on March 11, 1933, to the late Fred and Vivian (Verge) Colborne.
Harold is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lorraine (Cruickshank); four sons, Fred (Peg), Calgary, Tom (Susan), Sydney, Hugh (Jocelyn) and Stuart (Elizabeth), both of Halifax; eight grandchildren, Erin, Amanda, Adrienne, Bailey, Chelsea, James, Jeremy and Jack; two sisters, Doris (the late Art) Heading and Freda (John) Marusiak; brother, Gordon (Sylvia); sister-in-law, Sharon Colborne and brother-in-law, Bud MacDonald, all in Sydney. Harold will be greatly missed by all his nieces, nephews and many family members and friends.
He was predeceased by his sister, Minnie MacDonald; brothers, Fred (in infancy), George and Jerry.
Harold served in the RCAF for 30 years, including serving as fire chief at CFS Sydney. He was stationed at several bases across Canada and spent two years at Marville, France. He was an ordinary member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 12, for 23 years. He taught St. John Ambulance First Aid courses for a number of years, a past member of the Schooner Curling Club, a former coach of Sydney Academy Badminton teams. In his youth, Harold was an accomplished basketball player and had the pleasure of once playing on a team against the Harlem Globetrotters at the old YMCA.
There will be no visitation. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
