With broken hearts and great sadness, we the Family of Maria (Lafarth) McNeil, formerly of Reservoir Avenue, Glace Bay, presently Nolan’s Lane Complex, regret to announce her sudden passing on Friday, October 23, 2009 surrounded by her loving family at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
Born in Germany on May 8, 1923 she came to Canada shortly after her marriage to the late Robert (Bob) McNeil in the mid 1950s. Together they raised three children and were members of St. John's Parish, Glace Bay, where she remained an active member.
Maria enjoyed spending time with her family (her pride and joy), the outdoors, planting flowers and on her swing socializing with friends. She could be seen traveling up and down Main Street with her walker, traveling to visit her Family and spending time with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed shopping and listening to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles. Prior to her retirement she was employed at the former Isle Royale Motel.
Survived by children Robert (Diane Sampson) of Glace Bay, Willie of Glace Bay, and Anna (Tom) Hennessey of Edmonton, Alberta; grandchildren Krystle, Amanda, Brodie, Anne-Marie, Courtney, Tyler, David, and Kari; sisters-in-law Mary McNeil of Glace Bay, Anne Howlett of Thornhill, Ontario; brothers-in-law Raymond McNeil of Sydney and Charles (Chuck) McNeil, Edmonton, Alberta. Besides her husband, she was predeceased by several brothers and sisters in Germany and brother-in-law James Alexander McNeil, Glace Bay.
Visitation at Curry's Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay will be held on Sunday, Oct. 25th 7-9 p.m. and Monday, Oct. 26th 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and funeral Mass Tuesday, Oct. 27, 2009 at 2 p.m. St. John's Parish, New Aberdeen under the direction of Father Leo Boone.
In lieu of flowers donations in Maria’s memory can be made to the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Renal Dialysis Foundation.
