It is with heavy hearts that we, the family of Edna MacIntyre, announce her passing on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2009, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital with her loving husband, daughter and sons by her side. Edna passed after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
Born in Sydney, N.S., Sept. 27, 1938, she was the daughter of Marjorie (MacGillivary) Reid and the late C. Albert Reid, Gabarus.
Edna was a devoted wife, daughter, mother and grandmother She will be greatly missed for her kindness, caring and love of life. Edna was a graduate of Sydney Academy and Provincial Normal College, Truro. After graduation, Edna taught in Gabarus, Waverly and 20 years at Margaret MacVicar School in Catalone. After retiring in 1994, Edna enjoyed spending time with Freddie at their summer home in Gabarus. She also loved attending her grandsons’ sporting events. Edna was a member of Bethel United Church, Marion Bridge as well as a member of the Bethel UCW and the Marion Bridge Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Fred; daughter, Heather, Coxheath; sons, Paul, at home, and David (Tracy), St. Albert, Alta. She is also survived by her mother, Marjorie Reid, Gabarus; her brother, Ernest (Noreen) Reid, Edmonton, Alta.; her precious grandsons, Jeffrey and Gregory Byrne, Coxheath, and Noah MacIntyre, St. Albert, Alta.; brothers-in-law, Charlie (Sharon) MacIntyre, Rod (Janie) MacIntyre, Catalone and Allison (Donna) MacIntyre, Sydney; sisters-in-law, Eunice Sutherland, Gabarus, and Florence MacIntyre, Catalone; as well as many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
Edna was predeceased by her father, Albert Reid, her father and mother-in-law, Rod and Agnes MacIntyre, her brothers-in-law, Johnnie MacIntyre and Ernest Sutherland.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27 at Sydney Memorial Chapel, Welton Street, Sydney, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 28 at Bethel United Church, Hillside Road, Marion Bridge. Interment at Lakeview Cemetery, Gabarus, N.S.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethel United Church, Marion Bridge or the Hospice Palliative Care Society of Cape Breton.
