MILLER: Elmer, a well-known businessman for 40 years, passed away at the Swift Current Palliser Regional Care Centre on October 22, 2009. Elmer is survived by his loving wife Marge of 58 years; along with his children Rick (Deb) of Swift Current, Jim of Lethbridge and Danny (Jeanne) of Calgary and his 4 grandchildren Jessica, Aaron, Nicholas and Benjamin. He is survived by his brothers Herb (Yvonne) of Calgary, Morley (Lavina) of Penticton, Don (Maureen) of Kelowna and Tom (Judy) of Melbourne, Australia. Elmer is predeceased by his father Robert, his mother Lena, stepmother Mamie, older brother Ray and sister-in-law Leone.
Elmer was born in Success on April 8, 1927. The early part of his life was spent on the family farm with his father Robert, mother Lena and his five brothers Ray, Morley, Herb, Tom and Don. When Elmer was 19 he attended the Moose Jaw carpentry school and while attending a dance at Temple Gardens he met Marge Dennehy who was attending Normal School. They were married four years later in Swift Current in 1951. Elmer worked for five years as a carpenter for MacWilliam's Construction until he opened Miller Brothers New and Used Furniture. Shortly after Miller Brothers opened for business, Elmer and his brother Ray trained themselves to be auctioneers. As auctioneers they held weekly auction sales on Wednesday evenings and eventually they branched out to conducting farm auctions and estate sales. Elmer and Marge were active members of the Swift Current Square Dance Club within which Elmer was the club caller for 25 years. In addition to Square Dancing and Square Dance calling Elmer enjoyed playing golf. For many years each fall Elmer and Marge would make a trip to BC to enjoy the mountains and golf in the fine fall weather.
A prayer service was held for Elmer on Sunday, October 25, 2009 at 7:00 PM at Warren's Funeral Home Chapel with Vivian Bosch officiating. The funeral service was held on Monday, October 26, 2009 at 2:00 PM from the Christ the Redeemer Catholic Church in Swift Current, SK with Father Sathiadas Antony officiating. Musicians for the service were Tom and Gloria Dennehy and Marlene Dolter. The interment service was held at the Hillcrest Cemetery, Swift Current, SK with the following serving as pallbearers: Don Miller, Ron Popein, Mike Dennehy, Orville Salberg, Mike Francow and Barry Cuthbert. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Ailsby, Sam Wiens, Art Waker, Mel Crampton and Jack Davidson.
