Annie Mae MacKinnon, 83, of Christmas Island died on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, on Soldier’s Cove, Harbourstone Enhanced Care, Sydney. She had left her beloved home in Christmas Island four years ago after the death of her husband, Howard. That move quickened the advance of the Alzheimer’s disease that had set in less intensely some time earlier.
Annie is survived by her sister, Cassie MacNeil, Massachusetts; all eight of her children and by all but one of her 15 grandchildren. Her children include, Michael, Toronto, Donald (Corina), Grande Prairie, Francis, Dartmouth, Kenzie (Casilda), Halifax, Billy (Sharon), Shenacadie, Donna MacKenzie (Gillis), Sydney, Margie MacLeod (Cyril), Coxheath, and Mary Lou Spence (Neil), Toronto. Her grandchildren are Sari MacKinnon, Faith and Kirk MacKinnon, Jeffrey and Caitlyn MacKinnon, Alec, Annie Mae and Neil MacKinnon, Meghan, Gillian and Liam MacKenzie, Colin, Sheena and Ian MacLeod, and Davis and Kristen Spence.
Annie would be disappointed at missing the upcoming birth of her first great-grandchild. Annie was devoted to her family and her community where she was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary and Clan MacNeil. But those were never exclusive categories for her. Her family could expand to include whomever she knew who could benefit from a kind word, a hot meal or a place to stay for a while. Her community generally included anyone she met, regardless of their circumstance; for she always assumed that everyone deserved her kindness and respect. She most enjoyed hosting a full, noisy house of family and friends, new and old.
She was the daughter of the late Alex and Sarah (MacNeil) MacKenzie of Benacadie. She was predeceased by her husband, Howard, of 58 years, sister, Mary MacMullin, and brothers, Johnnie, Donald, and Angus.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Oct. 27 at St. Barra’s Church, Christmas Island, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, Oct. 28 at St. Barra’s Church at 11 a.m., Rev. Paul Abbass officiating, with interment in St. Barra’s Cemetery.
