NEW GLASGOW – Rita Mae Johnson, age 95, of the Glen Haven Manor and formerly of Ghana Ave., New Glasgow, passed away Monday, October 24, 2011 in the Glen Haven Manor, New Glasgow.
Born in Tracadie, she was a daughter of the late John and Sarah (Elms) Clark.
She moved to New Glasgow and attended New Glasgow public schools after which she did domestic work. She worked at the Pictou Shipyard for a short time and then worked as a custodian for MT&T for over 20 years, retiring in 1981. She was a member of Second United Baptist Church since 1954. She taught Sunday school, CGIT and BYPU in early years. She was a member of the Senior Choir for almost 50 years, member of the Mixed Chorus, member of the Ladies Auxiliary where she was former secretary. She was a member of Bertha Myers WMS where she was past president and a member of the Aberdeen Hospital Auxiliary. She joined the Trinitarians where she delighted in visiting other churches. The highlight of her life was to travel with former minister, the Rev. Rhonda Britton and friend Joan Gero on a trip to Greece in 2004.
She is survived by son, Steve (Barbara), New Glasgow; daughters: Frances (Kenneth) Yearwood, Toronto; Carrie (Wilfred) Paris, Calgary; Marie Peters, Toronto; Vivian (Leroy) Clark, Montreal; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Ross, Chicago; several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by sisters: Mary Alice, Jeanette and Roselyn; brothers: Bill, Gordon, Jim and Albert.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service 2 p.m. Friday in Second United Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lorne Street Cemetery.
