It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the sudden passing of Richard Alexander Gillis, 70, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and uncle and longtime resident of Georges River, on Monday, Oct. 26, 2009, at the QE II Health Sciences Center in Halifax.
Born in Georges River, Richard was the son of the late Richard and Jessie (Hawkins) Gillis.
He was employed with the Royal Canadian Navy for 27 years, stationed in Halifax. He enjoyed farming, fishing and hunting and volunteered with the North Sydney Food Bank. Richard was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, and a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney.
Richard is survived by his loving wife, Gladys (Connolly) Gillis; one son, Norman (Brenda), Georges River; and one daughter, Jennifer (Sheldon) Cox, Grand Prairie, Alta.; four grandchildren, Katlyn, Candice, Richard (Cheryl) and Shyla (Billie); three great-grandchildren, Emily, Haley, Landon; his sister, Lorraine (Earl) Haystead, Stoney Creek, Ont.; brothers, Jack (Louise), Balls Creek, Earl, Red Lake, Ont., Warren (Linda), Millville, Sheldon (Lucille), Port Hope, Ont., David (Tammy), Stoney Creek, Ont., Lloyd (Diane), North Sydney; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents Richard was predeceased by a brother in infancy.
Visitation for Richard will be held from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, with Rev. Gloria McClure-Fraser officiating. Burial to follow in Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney.
