Robert E. ‘Bob’ Planetta, 70, passed away Sunday, Oct. 30, 2011, at his home, following a battle with heart disease and cancer for the past several years.
Bob is survived by Colleen C. MacPherson, his loving and devoted partner of 26 years; daughter, Samantha Planetta, Montreal; stepdaughter, Tasse Jennifer Kennedy, Ontario; sisters, Carol Rogers (the late William) and Beverly Wells (James); brother, William (Sherri); aunt, Maude Smith; in-laws, Pricilla Waddell, Jim, Moose, Pat and Jed Corbett; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Edmund H. Planetta, Merlin Planetta (Ash) and Ron Corbett.
Bob attended Sydney Academy, Xavier Junior College and Moncton Flying School. He was a licensed commercial pilot. Work took Bob to Wabush Mines, Labrador, Canso Town, N.S., Glace Bay Heavy Water Plant and Atlantic Concrete, Sydney. He owned and operated Plan Insulations and later, Sydney Engine for some 25 years, until his retirement in 2004. In the late 70s and early 80s, Bob was active in stock car racing, as a builder, driver and promoter. Crafting and preparing for Cape Breton Home craft shows was a major hobby shared with his partner, Colleen. Bob was a caring, gentle man who loved his family, friends, and neighbors, particularly the Deveaux’s and George Sparling. He also loved his many cats, especially his recent buddy, Willow. Bob fought the good fight and now he rests.
At his request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bob’s life will be held Sunday, Nov. 6 from 2-4 p.m. at his home on 95 Spruce St., Sydney. Please join us to share your memories and stories.
