Slaunwhite, Pauline Beatrice “Polly” — 87, Windsor, passed away peacefully on November 9, 2011, at the Windsor Elms Village in Falmouth, which had been her home since 2007. Born on July 10, 1924, in Wentworth, Hants County, Nova Scotia, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Lillian (Smith) Leighton. Polly was a loving wife, mother and homemaker. In her early years she was a member of the RCAF. She taught Brownies, volunteered with the children’s breakfast program at the Windsor Elementary School and was an active member of the seniors group L.A.M.P., the Windsor UCW, and the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 009, Windsor. Polly loved to travel and spent several winters in Florida. She spent the last four years in the wonderful care of the Windsor Elms Village. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah (Ben) Robertson, Windsor; sister, Sadie (Robert) Feltham, Spryfield; sister-in-law, Marjorie (Jim) Emmins, Willowdale, Ontario; much beloved great goddaughter, Mae Ru Sanford, Wolfville; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her parents, Harry and Lillian (Smith) Leighton; she was predeceased by her husband, Roy; son, Daryl; sisters, Ruby Leighton, Marion (Harold) Cochrane, and Harriet (Harry) Hood; brothers, Wylie, Robie, Percy, Charlie and Murray Leighton. Cremation has taken place, and there was no visitation by request. A memorial service and reception was held on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at 2 p.m. at the Windsor United Church, 613 King Street, Windsor. The Rev. Bill Gibson, Rev. Debra Mosher and Michelle Armstrong (intern) officiated. A private family interment was at Maplewood Cemetery, King Street, Windsor. The family extends a very special thank you to the staff at the Windsor Elms Village and particularly all of the staff on Meadowview Landing (and Second Hart in the old Elms facility) for their kind and loving care of Polly over the years. Thank you for providing a wonderful home for Polly and especially for caring for her with such compassion during her final days.
