Susan Margaret Battiste, 64, of Chapel Island, died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family at St. Martha’s Hospital in Antigonish on October 31, 2009, after a brief illness.
Sue was born in Antigonish on December 21, 1944, and was a daughter to the late Julia (Basque) and Noel Joe.
Besides her parents, Sue was predeceased by her husband, William in 1989 and her brother, Alfred Joe.
Well liked by members of her community, Sue would often be seen with her daughters anytime there was a karaoke or a dance with country and western music playing. She counted Elvis and Patsy Cline among her favourite artists. Sue was a pioneer and was the first woman to open her own convenience store, complete with grocery items, crafts and double up machines. She loved playing card games and bingo with her family and friends. Sue was a very talented crafter and often worked with leather and beads but was most proud of her basket weaving. Accompanied by one or more of her daughters, Sue would make her way to Quebec as part of the community’s annual pilgrimage to Ste. Anne de Beaupre. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception parish in Barra Head. Sue would spend her summers in Maine with her sister, Nancy.
Sue is survived by her three daughters, Nancy Battiste, Julia Battiste and Theresa (Ellery) Levesque, as well as by her only son, Noel. Also left to mourn her passing, are her grandchildren, Buck, Mariah and Faith, all of Chapel Island. She is also survived by her only sister, Nancy Powers of Windham, Maine. Sue will be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews, but especially by Stephen and John Jr. of Windham, Maine and Vivian and Alfred Joe Jr. of Eskasoni. She also leaves behind two god children, Lester Johnson of Chapel Island and David Isaac of Membertou.
Visitation will be held after 7 p.m. on Monday, November 2nd at the family home located at 12287, Highway 4, Chapel Island. The funeral mass will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 4 at 11 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Barra Head with Fr. Mariadoss Lourdusamy officiating. Graveside service will follow at a later date.
