September 6, 1928 - November 11, 2011

It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Stan Young. He leaves behind a large family and dear friends who loved him.

Stan was predeceased by his loving wife of 52 years, Shirley, (nee Gill).

Stan met and married Shirley and together they raised their five children in Smithers, B.C. before retiring to Kamloops, where they enjoyed the local bowling league until Shirley's passing in 2002.

To cherish his memory are their five children, Brian (Lynn), Allen (Maureen), Gord (Bev), Donalda Crawford (Steve) and David (Jade). Their twelve grandchildren, Aaron, Kelsey, Brienna, Zachary, Taylor Marie, Jacob, Darryl, Katelyn, Tony, Quinn, Shawn, Danielle and two great grandchildren, Morgana and Hayden will miss their Grandpa dearly.

Stan will be remembered with fond memories by his friend and companion of over eight years, Rose Williams. They continued bowling as a favoured past time.

Stan was born in Vancouver, B.C. and became very independent and hard working at a very young age. He began working at age fourteen in lumber mills in Terrace, Usk and Pacific B.C., and then finally joined the Canadian National Railway in Smithers, B.C. as a car man where he worked steadfastly for 35 years supporting his family. He was aptly suited to the attention to detail demanded of the job. Away from work, Stan's workshop was a sanctuary-where he happily maintained his keen sense of mechanics and ability to tinker, mend, fix, improve, and cobble together something from seemingly nothing. He loved to work in his workshop and he could repair anything using his own unique ingenuity.

He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and reliability. He was a man of few words but his sharp wit, easy sense of humor, bright blue eyes and strength of character are the defining characteristics of a man, husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be greatly missed.

At Stan's request there will be no public service and a private celebration of his life will be held by his family. Flowers are gratefully declined and in so choosing, donations to the Hearing Foundation of Canada and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada may be made in his memory.

Our family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to Dr. James Howie who cared for Dad for many years with sincerity and grace. As well, thanks to RIH staff for their quality and caring professionalism.
