BAILEY, Alan Westlake, M.A., M. Ed. (UNB), PhD., (University of Toronto) – Truro, died late Saturday morning, November 19, 2011, in Dartmouth General Hospital, of a sudden and unexpected heart attack, following successful knee replacement surgery. Alan was born in Cornwall Township, Ontario, on October 10, 1927. He was the son of the late James Herbert Bailey and Gladys Maud Jackson. He was employed at the Howard Smith Paper Mills for six years and became their youngest foreman. Later, he enrolled at the University of New Brunswick, where he earned both Bachelor and Master degrees in Arts and Education. Alan taught in the public schools of New Brunswick before joining the Education Faculty of Mount Allison University. Several years later, he was admitted to the Doctoral Program at the University of Toronto, where he was awarded the Pakenham Fellowship. At the conclusion of his studies, he graduated with a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Education. Dr. McCarthy, Principal of the Nova Scotia Teachers College, interviewed him in Toronto, and hired him on the spot. Alan moved to Truro with his family in 1964. He taught both the History and Philosophy of Education, at the college, until his retirement in 1992. Along with his regular teaching, he taught rifle shooting to the Physical Education students. Alan also lectured at Summer Schools at the Universities of Toronto, McGill, UNB, and the College of Cape Breton. He was an active member of the Nova Scotia Government Employees Union, and the Shop Steward for the college. He served at the local, provincial and national levels and on bargaining units and committees. He was a long- standing member of Brunswick Street United Church. His interests included private flying, rifle shooting, gardening, reading, crossword puzzles and computer learning. Alan is survived by his wife of almost 56 years, Dorothy Irene (Macdonald) Bailey; his three sons: Philip Westlake and wife Donna, St. Albert, Alberta; Michael David and wife, Arlene, Truro; John Gregory and wife, Mary Anne, Lake Echo, and his only daughter, Dr. Jane Elizabeth and husband John Mason, Halifax. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Jason and Jennifer Bailey, Gilles (Shante) Tougas and Michelle (Anthony) Tougas, and Emily and Liam Bailey, and infant twins, Gerald and Jillian Mason, as well as one great grandson, Caius Tougas, one sister, Ruth (Mrs. Harold Fourney), Bainsville, Ontario, and one brother, David, Airdrie, Alberta. He was predeceased by his sister, Joan (Nelson) Cox. (Perth, Ontario) The body has been cremated. There will be no visitation or memorial service, at Alan's request. A private family committal service will be held at a later date, with interment in the family plot, in Belmont Cemetery.
