Etta Penny passed away peacefully Friday, Nov. 18, 2011, at the Glace Bay Hospital just one month short of her 100th birthday.
Born in Port Morien, she was the daughter of the late Nathaniel and Sarah (MacAulay) Spencer.
She was a member of St. John’s United Church and a life member of St. John’s United Church Women. Etta was also a member of Queen Victoria Rebekah Lodge No. 63, a former member of Rippling Wave Rebekah Lodge No. 89 in Port Morien. She worked for many years for the Community Fair and Ladies Auxiliary of Port Morien Volunteer Fire Department.
Etta was the last member of her immediate family.
She is survived by nieces, Margo (John) Wray, Hawaii, Sandra (George ) Collier, Moncton, Norma (Fred) Weston, Moncton, Helen Jackson, Glace Bay, Audrey (John) Moore, Donkin; and nephews, Allister (Donelda) Spencer, John (Ethel) Spencer, Port Morien.
She was predeceased by her husband, Mark in 1987, sisters, Ada, Lillian (Sally) Thomas, Helen Burlingame and brother, Aubrey.
As requested by Etta, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held at Black Brook Cemetery, Port Morien on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2011, at 2 p.m.
Memorial donations may be made to the St. John’s United Church Fund or the Black Brook Cemetery Fund.
