The family of Roland Davidson Thompson announce, with sorrow, his death but with joy in his eternal rest our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009, at the Manitoulin Lodge at 93 years of age. Roland was born to the late Duncan Henry Thompson and Thursa (Yeo) on Friday, Dec. 10, 1915, at the family homestead in Grand River, P.E.I. Roland was the 14th child of 15 and his death brings an end to that generation of the Thompson clan. Roland married Pearl Kathleen Wood from Traveller’s Rest on July 11, 1945, at Summerside, P.E.I. He is lovingly missed by his beloved wife, Pearl, and their children, Erwin, Roger, Beverly (husband Peter Archambault) Mackwood and Joy Bainborough. Pappie was loved by his grandchildren and left many wonderful memories for Sarah (Trevor) Frampton, Christopher (Amy Henson) Thompson, Gilda Mackwood, Emily (David Francis) Mackwood, and Laura Bainborough. He was the great-grandfather of Lauren. He was predeceased by siblings John, Stanley, Albert, Alpin, Euphemia, Harriet, Jennie, Robert, Winnifred, Florence, Margaret, Kathleen, Hiram, Olive. He will be missed by sister-in-laws Gladys, Louise and Wilma, as well as Pearl’s family, to whom he had a close bond: Luella Cotton, Lloyd and Velda Wood, Velda MacDonald, Evelyn and Keith Callbeck and John and Olive Wood. Roland was a veteran of the Second World War. His working career included fox ranching and farm labourer in P.E.I. In Ontario, he worked as a mechanic with Inco for 23 years at Levack Complex. Roland moved from P.E.I. to Levack, Ont., in May, 1950, leaving his family while looking for work. The family moved to Levack in August 1950 and resided there until he and Pearl moved to Gore Bay in August 1978. The family made a return to his beloved P.E.I. for vacation every year to visit family and friends until his health failed. Roland had a wonderful sense of humour and enjoyed the company of others. He was a very active member of St. John’s United Church in Levack and Lyons Memorial United Church in Gore Bay, serving on several boards, as well as the boards of the Levack/Onaping and Gore Bay Credit Union for several years. Visitation will take place at Culgin Funeral Home, 3 McQuarrie Blvd., on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2009, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. A celebration of the life of Roland will take place at Culgin Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the Wm.
