The Late Mae Power passed away peacefully on the morning of November 2, 2009 at the Richmond Villa Nursing Home in St. Peter’s, Nova Scotia. Born in Gardiner Mines, N.S. she was the daughter of James and Minnie (McCormack) Mac Neil. She was predeceased by her husband, William Power and her daughter Judy Graham. She is survived by her son, Paul Power (Shirley) of B.C., three grandsons - Stuart, Trevor, and Jordan (Ontario), her sister Catherine (Kaye) Chisholm, Neil’s Harbour, and brother Stanley Mac Neil, Ontario.
Mae was one of only two girls in a family of fourteen and was predeceased by four brothers who died in infancy: Adrian, James, John, and Joseph. She was also predeceased by brothers Andrew, Charles (Chas), Alphonsus (Phonse), Michael, Peter, Gregory, and Ignatius.
Mae moved to Ontario with her sister Kay during the Second World War and worked in a munitions plant as her part in the war effort. She subsequently married William Power of Whitby, Ontario, and helped him run a large dairy farm until his death in the 1970s. She subsequently returned home to Cape Breton where she resided with her sister for a number of years until she entered the MacGillivray Guest Home and later the Richmond Villa.
A warm and loving person Mae will ever be remembered for the acts of kindness she performed throughout her life. Her thoughts were always for the care and comfort of other people. Mae had many hardships to overcome, especially the death of her mother when Mae was six and the family was for the most part separated, the untimely death of her beloved daughter Judy, the sudden demise of her husband Bill, and her own personal struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was able to meet these challenges without resentment, and indeed, strove only to make the world a better place for those around her. In this, she was always successful.
The family would like to thank the staffs of both the Richmond Villa and McGillivray Nursing Homes for the solicitude with which they treated Mae over an eleven year period. Mae Power will be lovingly remembered for her gentle and generous spirit by all who had the privilege to know her. Her ashes will be interred with her husband in Pickering, Ontario.
