Passed peacefully away on November 4, 2009, at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Nellie Louise Bishop, age 88 years. Born in Clarenville to George and Sarah Strong, she was predeceased by her husband William “Bill”; sisters: Minnie Haines, Dorothy Bourne, Alice Moss; brothers: Alf Strong and John Strong; and son-in-law Dave Wicks. Lovingly remembered by children: Keith Bishop, Toronto, Beverley Wicks, Dartmouth, Karen Bishop, St. John’s; granddaughter Kara Murphy (fiancée Stephen Sheppard); son-in-law David Murphy; sister Bertha Pitcher; brother-in-law Roy Bishop (Sally); along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends including the staff and residents of Meadow Creek Retirement Centre where she resided for the past 4 years. Nellie left home at the age of 17 years to become a teacher in such communities as Bunyan’s Cove, Grand Falls and King’s Point. While attending Memorial University College, she met and married the love of her life. She was an active member of St. James United Church, the U.C.W. and the Agnes Pratt Auxiliary. Her many interests included traveling, bridge, lawn bowling and producing beautiful crochet and tatting work. Resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Friday, November 6th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. and Saturday, November 7th from 10-11:45 a.m. Funeral service to be held at Barrett’s Chapel, 328 Hamilton Avenue on Saturday, November 7th at 12 noon. Interment will take place at a later date in the United Church Cemetery in Clarenville, NL.
