Blanche MacRae Barnhill
Barnhill, Blanche MacRae, Truro; With the grace and quiet dignity that characterized her life, our mother, Blanche Barnhill, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 26, 2011, in the Colchester Regional Hospital Truro, surrounded by members of her loving family. Born in South Branch, January 15, 1920, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Jennie (Fulton) Andrews. She is survived by her three daughters, Sharon, Carolyn and Angela, and her two sons, Logan “Ned” (Sandra) and Rex (Janice) Barnhill. She was predeceased by her husband, Logan; a granddaughter Rebecca Barnhill in infancy; sister, Rena (Bill) Johnson; brothers, Fulton (Verna) Andrews, Arthur Andrews, Douglas Andrews in infancy, and brother-in-law, George Reeves. She is survived by sister, Muriel Reeves; brothers, Frank (Joyce) Andrews, Paul (Eileen) Andrews; sisters-in-law, Edith and Helene Andrews; several nieces and nephews. Nana will be sadly missed by her eight grandchildren, Jim Moody, Heather Moody-Gillis (Joey), Andrew and Adam Barnhill, Kyle (Michelle) Barnhill, Beth (Michael) MacLellan, Jennie and Logan McLeod. Blanche graduated from Normal College, Truro, in 1939 and taught at various schools in the area during the war years. While teaching in Belmont she met and married Logan Stanley Barnhill in 1942. She was an invaluable asset to her husband both in his career as a prominent lumberman and stockbroker. Blanche was a member of the Wesley United Church, Belmont, the UCW, the church choir and played the piano and organ. In Truro, Mum joined the First United Church and was a faithful member of the UCW. Mum and Dad traveled extensively and especially looked forward to summers at the family cottage in Saints Rest since 1951. Playing the piano was one of Mum’s favorite past times as well as knitting and doing crossroad puzzles. The family would like to thank Dr. David Blair for his professionalism and kindness to Mum and our family far beyond the call of duty. Visitation will be held 7-9pm Wednesday, November 30, in the Mattatall ~ Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street Truro. Funeral service will be held 2pm Thursday, December 1, in the First United Church, Prince Street Truro, Rev. Valerie Kingsbury officiating with interment to follow in the Belmont Cemetery, Belmont. Donations in Blanches memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia.
