It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing, at home, of Dad with his devoted family at his side.
Born in Glace Bay, he was the son of the late Stanley and Margaret (Nash) Appleton.
Tom is survived by his loving wife and soul mate, Shirley (Smith); children, Mark (Colleen), Mary Leigh (Lawson) Maxwell, Joel, at home and Kelly, Halifax; grandchildren, Christopher, Calgary, Colin, Halifax, Erica (Kenzie), Halifax, Allison, Napanee, and Michael, Halifax; and cherished great-granddaughter, Ellen Leigh. Also surviving are brothers, Bill (Ricky) and Roy (Blanche); sisters, Bernice (Bill), Audrey (the late Lawrence); as well as many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents he was predeceased by brothers, Arnold and Bernie and sisters, Edna, Dorothy, Annie, Joyce and Shirley.
Tom was employed for 36 years with the S&L and Devco Railways. He was a dedicated family man and a true friend with an outgoing personality and a great sense of humour. He was involved in many sports in his younger years and was an avid fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Boston Red Sox. Tom was an active member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church and its Social Club. He enjoyed camping in the Highlands, travelling and bowling, being an original member of the Devco Bowling League and the Glace Bay Senior’s Skating Club.
Memorial donations may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society, St. Mary's Anglican Church or to a charity of one’s choice.
Respecting his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held today (Monday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Patten Funeral Home, 71 Union St., Glace Bay, N.S. Funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Marconi Street, on Tuesday, Nov. 10 at 11 a.m. Reception to follow in the parish hall. Private interment at St. Mary's Anglican Cemetery.
