Born in Nyanza, Oct. 17, 1917, died in Baddeck, Nov. 9, 2009.
Chal was the son of Charles and Margaret (Campbell) Fownes and a longtime tourism proprietor in Baddeck and Ingonish (Inverary Inn, Highland Bungalows, Duffus House). Chal displayed his creativity in many house renovations and in his passion for gardening. He was secretly planning his next project.
A Second World War Air Force veteran, he was predeceased by brothers, James (Christine), Donald, sister-in-law, Mary (Albert) and nephew, Sandy.
He is survived by best friend and partner of 33 years, Grace Ann MacDonald, brother, Albert, Moncton; sister-in-law, Margaret Fownes; nieces, Ginny, Minty (Mary); nephew, Graeme (Dianne); several great nieces and nephews and two great great nephews. Chal will be greatly missed by many close friends.
There will be no visitation. At Chal’s request a private service will take place at Stewartdale Cemetary, Nov. 13, 11:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Victoria County Memorial Hospital Foundation.
