Relatives and friends will be saddened to learn that on Dec. 13, 2011, Reagh Lorne Dennis, 87 of Halifax, died suddenly and peacefully in Arborstone Enhanced Care nursing home. Reagh was born in Arlington, PE, the third son of the late William (Will) James and Ada Ruth (Gorrill) Dennis, who moved the family to Port Hill, PE, when Reagh was seven. He was predeceased also by brother Keith; sisters Wanda Hope and Celie Dennis and Emily Pearle who died in infancy; sisters-in-law Hazel Dennis and Olive Dennis; brothers-in-law Rev. Guy Dowding, William (Bill) Barnes, Bertie Hope and Gerald Smith. Reagh was the loving and devoted husband of Rose Marie (Barnes) for nearly 64 years and dear father to their sons Michael, Edmonton, Paul (Rhonda), St. Margaret’s Bay and Peter (Brenda), Lower Sackville; and proud, loving grandfather to Rachel (Craig) Guthrie, St. Margaret’s Bay, Gregory (Tessa) Dennis, St. Margaret’s Bay and Spencer Dennis, Lower Sackville; and great-grandfather to Kyle and Jack Guthrie whose visits to him in Arborstone greatly amused and delighted him. He is also survived by brothers Erwin, of Ellerslie and Summerside, PE, Arnett (Maralee) , Rapid City, SD; Clare (Julia), Port Dover, Ont., Edgar (Janet), Port Hill, PE; sisters-in-law Jennie Dennis, Summerside, PE, Margaret Barnes, Ottawa Ont., and Verena Dowding-Smith, Halifax N.S. as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Reagh graduated from Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, PE, and during three years of teaching school, he studied electrical engineering, working over the next 40 years in sales and management with Northern Electric, and McGraw-Edison in Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Fredericton, and returned to Halifax in 1984, starting his own company, R.L. Dennis Associates. He retired in 1991, leaving the company in the capable hands of sons Paul and Peter. Reagh was a member in several organizations, including Illuminating Engineering Society, serving as chairman, Ottawa Section. A life-long Anglican, he served as Rector’s Warden in Christ Church Cathedral, Ottawa and Junior and Senior Warden in St. Paul’s Church, Halifax, on the Grand Parade. For more than 20 years, Reagh enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, all members of Ashburn Golf & Country Club. He loved to play Bridge, especially with his Golden Boys Group, and he loved to build things and fix things, and in spite of being burdened with Parkinson’s Disease for almost 13 years, he was able to play Bridge and fix things until recently. Reagh was a kind and loving man, a devoted husband and wonderful dad and granddad; he has left a strong legacy of love to his family and friends and he will be sadly missed by them. We are blest to have had Reagh in our lives, and we will work hard to be the family he was so intensely proud of. Visitation will be held at J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 339 Lacewood Dr., Halifax 902-455-0531 on Sunday, Dec. 18 from 4-7 p.m. Funeral service at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, on Monday, Dec. 19 at 11 a.m., Rev. Paul Friesen officiating. If you wish, donations to Reagh’s memory may be made to the Parkinson’s Society, Heart and Stroke Foundation, St. Paul’s Anglican Church, St. James Church, Port Hill, PE, or a charity of your choice. Interment in St. James Church Cemetery, Port Hill, PE, at a later date. Special thanks to the wonderfully caring staff at Arborstone Enhanced Care. “It is by believing, hoping, loving and doing that man finds joy and peace” – John Landcaster Spalding.
