NEW GLASGOW – Joseph Edward MacGillivray, age 74, of Dover Ave., New Glasgow, passed away Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at the QEII VG Site, Halifax.
Born in New Glasgow, he was the eldest son of the late Joseph William and Mary Jane (Lewis) MacGillivray.
He started his working career at Steel Furnishing and retired from Trenton Works after 35 years. He was a member of Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church. In earlier years, he was an avid baseball and hockey player and later coached at Saint John’s Academy and New Glasgow Minor Hockey. He was a Toronto Maple Leaf fan. Joe’s family were the most important part of his life and he is survived by the love of his life and childhood sweetheart, his wife of 54 years, Jean (MacInnis); daughter, Maxine, New Glasgow; sons: Joe (Janet), New Glasgow; Allan (Betty), Stellarton; Steven (Donna), New Glasgow; grandchildren: Laurie and Lindsay MacDonald; Joey, Kate, Marla, Gina, Allan, Staci and Steven MacGillivray; two great-grandchildren, Lachlan and Calli; sisters: Barbara Stanislaw, New Jersey; Colleen (Dan) McCormack, Stoney Creek; Dorothy Harb, New Glasgow; Donna (Paul) Holmes, North River, PEI; Patricia (Bob) Morton, New Glasgow; Jane (Leonard) Knickle, Black Point; brothers, Ivan (Eileen), New Glasgow; Gregory (Cathy), Trenton; uncle: Harold (Corrine) Lewis; aunt: Katherine Thibeau; several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by infant son Edward; brothers-in-law, Jim Stanislaw and Charlie Harb.
Visitation 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday in the R.H. Porter Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral mass 11 a.m. Saturday in Saint John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, New Glasgow, with Father Gary MacPherson and Father Donald Boudreau officiating. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
